Reinventing yourself as an Over 50 Entrepreneur might sound a bit far-fetched. You might have been a salaried employee all your life with a yearning passion to be an entrepreneur or you could have made a big stuff-up somewhere along the line. You could be thinking that the risk is far too high. And you might be right. The most important part to believe when it comes to reinventing yourself at 50 is: Yes, it is possible! A thousand times yes! And we have the proof!
Enter Our Expedition Business Guest: Rael Levitt
I recently had an Expedition Business conversation with Rael Levitt, founding shareholder of Lift Airlines and CEO of InoSpace, and Lisa. He is also the author of the best-selling autobiography It Takes a Tsunami. If you listen to our podcast conversation, you will find a highly successful entrepreneur filled with an abundance of humility about his journey of reinventing himself after he lost his reputation in spectacular fashion! This gave Carte Blanche lots of material for a lekker ‘gripping’ story but a Tsunami of massive proportions for Rael Levitt.
The Proof is in the Pudding
As an Over 50 entrepreneur who has gone through my own trials & tribulations, nothing grips my imagination like a never-ending list of entrepreneurs who only became super successful in their fifties and beyond.
- Harland David Sanders or Colonel Sanders as he is popularly known, founded Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) at the age of 62.
- McDonald’s Ray Kroc created the now-famous McDonald’s when he was 52.
- The Huffington Post: Arianna Huffington launched The Huffington Post when she was 55.
- Martha Stewart Living: Martha Stewart launched her magazine, Martha Stewart Living, at nearly 50, which led to a highly successful brand.
- Bobbi Brown (Bobbi Brown Cosmetics): Brown launched her cosmetics line at the age of 52, which was later acquired by Estée Lauder.
Am I Up for the Challenge?
This first phase is a deep inner journey toward self-awareness, learning more about what really drives you, what stops you, what you are passionate about, what motivates and interests you, and what values are essential for you to feel fulfilled.
Working on your mindset fitness is part and parcel of the process. But more than that, you need to know who to trust, who to believe, and who you should stay away from as far as the North Pole from the South Pole! In the 30+ years that I have been in strategic marketing planning and execution, I have certainly seen it all. There is an overabundance of people who say they know what they are doing. The reality is there are people who believe they know what they are doing, but sadly they don’t.
One massive advantage when reinventing yourself as an Over 50 entrepreneur is that you are not that gullible anymore. A small tweak in your armor and you are good to go!
Where to from here
AddVentures is planning to spend a lot more time on the topic of reinventing yourself as a 50-ish entrepreneur. Whether you have never been an entrepreneur ever. Perhaps you yearn to be one before it is too late. Or whether you have made some wrong moves along the way. It does not matter. It’s all about how you reinvent yourself as an entrepreneur in your forties, fifties, sixties, or even older. The definition of a 50-ish entrepreneur is up for debate!
If Colonel Sanders could have made a spectacular success at 62, who says you cannot do it too?
